Katherine Liberovskaya and Richard Garet will join forces for an audiovisual collaboration in real time. Both artists will use a variety of visual and audio components combining analog and digital processes in order to generate imagery that will become a part of the live mix. The idea behind this collaboration is to merge the visuals into a continuous flux of appropriating each other's imagery that is then reprocessed in the moment and fed back into the room. The resulting projected visual content will simultaneously serve to inform the sonic experience in terms of translating modulated light into sound. Additional sonic elements will also be incorporated, including field recordings, audio feedback, and computer processing. While Liberovskaya and Garet have never collaborated with each other in the past, they have been friends and fans of each other's work for several years. For this occasion both artists are most interested in merging their creativity and inspiration to visually and sonically activate live space in a polymedia experiential event.

Richard Garet works interweaving multiple media including moving image, sound, live performances, and photography. He completed his MFA at Bard College, and was awarded a New York State Council on the Arts Grant. He recently completed in 2010 an artist residency at Issue Project Room, NY, and previously completed a residency at Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, and Scottsdale, Arizona in 2006. Recent exhibitions and performances include: Never Can Say Goodbye at the former Tower Records store; Sonochrome: an exhibition of recent works by Richard Garet, at the Public Trust Gallery, Dallas, Texas; Leervoll, Diapason Gallery; and previous exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), Barcelona, Spain; Biennial Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico; el Museo del Barrio, NYC; and more. His sound compositions have been published through sound based labels such as And-Oar, Non Visual Objects, Winds Measure Recordings, Unframed Recordings, Con-V, Leerraum, White_Line Editions, and Contour Editions. Additionally Garet co-curates with Louky Keijsers Koning, the monthly performance event LMAKseries, which integrates film, video, sound art, and media performance into the gallery's mission at LMAK Projects in the L.E.S, NYC. Garet also currently directs the independent media label Contour Editions publishing works that explore the various possibilities of sound and light.

Katherine Liberovskaya is a video and media artist based in Montreal,
Canada, and New York City. She has been working predominantly in
experimental video since the late eighties. Over the years, she has produced
many single-channel videos, video installation works and video performances
which have been presented at a wide variety of artistic venues and events
around the world. As of recent years her work - in single-channel and
installation video as well as performance - mainly revolves around
collaborations with new music composers and sound artists, notably Phill
Niblock, Al Margolis/If,Bwana, Zanana, Hitoshi Kojo, David Watson, David
First and Keiko Uenishi (o.blaat). Since 2003 she is active in live video
mixing exploring improvisation with numerous live new music/audio artists
including: Shelley Hirsch, Anne Wellmer, Kristin Norderval, Monique
Buzzarté, Margarida Garcia, Anthony Coleman, Micheal Delia, André Gonçalves,
Matt Pass, Audrey Chen, murmer, Marina Rosenfeld, Jim Bell, Jason Kahn, Tom
Hamilton, among others. She is also involved in the programming and
organization of diverse media art events, notably with Experimental
Intermedia, NY (Screen Compositions 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) and
the OptoSonic Tea series, in collaboration with Ursula Scherrer, at Diapason
in NYC. Recent presentations, exhibitions and performances include, among
others: Paivascapes #1 (2011, Nodar, Portugal), FIFA International Festival
of Films on Art (2011, Montreal, Canada), Cyberfest 2010 (St-Petersburg,

"Dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham (1919 - 2009) has been a decisive force in the creation, dissemination, and survival of contemporary music since the mid-1940s," Amy C. Beal



The Music Committee of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (MCDC) will present two one-night-only concerts on Sunday, March 20, 2011, to celebrate the release of "Music for Merce," a 10-CD boxed set from New World Records. From 5 - 7 and from 8:30 - 11 pm, the concerts offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for audiences to witness the remarkable breadth and vitality of the musical community-from John Cage to David Tudor, Takehisa Kosugi, and generations of experimental musicians-that played a critical role in Merce's life and work.



The concerts will include performances by composers and musicians featured on the boxed set, as well as many others, including: Christian Wolff, David Behrman, John King, Gordon Mumma, Takehisa Kosugi, Jon Gibson, Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster, Joan La Barbara, Stephan Moore, Jesse Stiles, George Lewis, Fast Forward, Marina Rosenfeld, Ikue Mori, Alvin Curran, Matana Roberts, Shelley Burgon, and Miguel Frasconi.



Noted music scholar Amy C. Beal, whose essay accompanies the boxed set, and David Vaughan, archivist for the Cunningham Dance Foundation, will also speak during the evening about Merce's influence and relationship with new music.



"Music for Merce" boxed sets will be available for purchase and the featured artists will be available to sign CDs following the concert.

Miguel Frasconi uses electronics and a menagerie of glass objects to create his sound world. He had the honor of working closely with John Cage starting in the late 1970s. He presently teaches electronic music at Bard College and performs with the new music ensemble Ne(x)tworks.



George E. Lewis is the Edwin H. Case Professor of American Music at Columbia University. The recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship in 2002, an Alpert Award in the Arts in 1999, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Lewis's work as composer and improvisor includes electronic and computer music, computer-based installations, and notated and improvisative forms, and is documented on more than 130 recordings. His widely acclaimed book, A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music (University of Chicago Press, 2008) was a 2009 recipient of the American Book Award.



Shelley Burgon is a multi-instrumentalist who is best known for her improvisational work blending an acoustic harp with a laptop in a way similar to that of traditional extended harp techniques. She is a member of the chamber group Ne(x)tworks, as well as the bands Family Dynamics and MERCE, and in May 2009, Burgon premiered a new piece for the Merce Cunningham Hudson Valley Project at Dia:Beacon.



Ikue Mori moved from Tokyo to New York in 1977. She started playing drums, then drum machines and collaborated with numerous improvisers throughout the US, Europe, and Asia, while continuing to produce and record her own music. Since 2000 started using laptop computers to expand her vocabulary, not only performing sounds with them but creating visual work as well.



Alvin Curran has realized a long and fruitful career as a composer/performer/ installation artist, writer and teacher in the American experimental music tradition. Born in Providence in 1938 he studied with Ron Nelson, Elliott Carter and Mel Powell, co-founded the group Musica Elettronica Viva in 1966 in Rome where he currently resides. More info at:

Fast Forward is a New York artist who works with aural, visual and sensual media. He toured extensively as a musician with The Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1994-2009. He recently presented his group works "Typhoon Shelter" in Hong Kong and "Musique a la Mode" in Berlin. In the 1970's, he studied with Robert Ashley and David Behrman. Forward is an advisor for the UMAMI food & art festival in New York and a regular guest professor at Kunstakademiet Bergen in Norway.

Chicago born, NYC based Matana Roberts is an alto saxophonist/composer/performer who works in various mediums of improvised sound and performance, and has been active in New York since 2001. A Vanlier and Brecht Forum fellow, as well as a 2008 and 2009 nominee for an Alpert Award in the Arts, she has appeared as a collaborator on recordings and performances worldwide with her own ensembles as well as with a wide variety of collaborative ensembles that span many sound genres. Her most recent recording is Matana Roberts: Live in London on Britain's Central Control International.




Marina Rosenfeld is an artist and composer based in New York. Her works, ranging from sound installations and site-specific performances to live turntablism, have been widely commissioned by institutions including the Whitney Biennial, the Holland Festival/Stedelijk Museum, Performa Biennial, Wien Modern, the Liverpool Biennial, Tate Modern, and many others. Upcoming projects in 2011 include new works for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Serralves Museum in Porto, and Ensemble neoN in Oslo. Rosenfeld has been a member of the faculty at Bard College since 2003, and co-chair of its MFA program in Music/Sound since 2007.

The Harmonic Center Of The Universe

In a darkened room, a large luminous orb pulses amid radial tendrils of audio-responsive LED's. Sounds and colors unfold an abstract narrative in which senses and forms are united in a gradual arc of elemental tones and visual rhythms. Cascading patterns of color and melody flow throughout the installation space as video paintings are projected from within the luminous orb.

The Harmonic Center Of The Universe makes use of inflatable sculpture, manipulated video projection, computer controlled LED arrays, real-time audio visual software, and analog projection tools. Jesse, Olivia, and Chris bring combined skill sets in fabric arts, electronics, audio-visual production, and computer music, finding in their collaboration an opportunity to cross-reference interests and technologies while synthesizing new modes of interdisciplinary experimentation.

Jesse Stiles (b. 1978, Boston, MA) is a new media artist, musician, and designer of electronic systems. Through the adaptive misuse of emerging digital technologies, Stiles creates works that are simultaneously entertaining, disorienting, immersive, and transcendental. Stiles' performances and generative installation work engage with and deconstruct a number of populist formats including electronic dance music, narrative cinema, and the "light show" - pushing these mediums into realms both sublime and subliminal.

Stiles' work has been exhibited and performed nationally and internationally at institutions including Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria), Lincoln Center (NYC, USA), Eyebeam (NYC, USA), Rencontres Internationales (Paris/Berlin/Madrid), and the American Land Museum (various sites, USA). Stiles has also produced a number of site-specific performances in unconventional sites such as "Topics in Advanced Facemelting," a light and sound performance in one of the United States' few remaining gasholder buildings (Troy, NY), and "Deja Rendez Vous" a performance on a floating video stage adrift in the Buffalo Bayou (Houston, TX).

Olivia Robinson is an installation artist, using photography, weaving, video, inflatable sculpture, multi-media and circuitry. She views installation and performance as mediums for connections between people and communities across boundaries and history. After earning her BFA in fiber art from the Maryland Institute College of Art, she received a MFA in electronic art from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Robinson has been awarded several residency and research fellowships, at such places as the Center for Land Use Interpretation in Wendover, Utah, the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, the Global Arts Village in New Delhi, India, and the Tasara Weaving Center in North Beypore, India. She was awarded the Trudy Morse, Malcolm S. Morse Award for new media in 2005. Her exhibition and performance record includes the Baltimore Museum of Art, the WPA/Corcoran Museum, the American Visionary Art Museum, the Museo d'Arte Provincia di Nuoro in Sardegna, Italy, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the Center for Photography at Woodstock, Performa 05 at PS1, and the 2005 and 2007 Boston Cyberarts Festivals.
