Autodidact Lenny Pickett began his career playing saxophone and clarinet in bars and on the street. He toured through the 70’s with the legendary r&b group Tower Of Power and worked in the 80’s as a saxophonist and an arranger for David Bowie, The Talking Heads and Laurie Anderson, among others. He is currently musical director for NBC’s Saturday Night Live. He has composed music for experimental dance and theater, including collaborations with choreographers Steven Petronio, Charles Moulton, Bebe Miller, Yoshiko Chuma, and the opera “Welfare”, with filmmaker Fred Wiseman and poet David Slavitt. He also contributed compositions for Alan Ginsberg’s recording “The Lion For Real” and William Burroughs’ “Dead City Radio”. His concert music has been performed by the Kronos Quartet, the New Century Saxophone Quartet, the New York Composers Orchestra, and others. BUT…. (of course there’s a catch….)

We need your help. You are our community – the artists and the audiences who’ve come to Roulette for the last 32 years because they love the music we present. You have built Roulette into New York City’s leading center for contemporary music.

Your donations will be essential in bringing to life this new space and ensuring our future stability as a cutting edge voice in contemporary music.

Your contribution will not only help us build this space; it will give us the encouragement that only our community can give us, and will demonstrate to foundations, public agencies, corporate and private donors that our community cares about Roulette and its future.

MUMBO JUMBO remastered and rereleased on Einstein Records!~

MUMBO JUMBO OUT NOW ON EINSTEIN RECORDS!

Originally released as a double length LP on Rift Records in 1986, this seminal recording of downtown legends Jim Staley, Fred Frith, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Bill Frisell, Shelly Hirsch, Elliot Sharp, Wayne Horvitz, and Samm Bennet is finally available in its entirety on this digitally remastered double-disc edition. Jim Staley & Co. conjure up “…prime…NYC art damage, all trios, with Staley’s expressive trombone as the common denominator”, (Bill Tilland, Option Magazine). The result of a philosophy that wishes to extend the development of intuition from the matter of spontaneous musical decisions to the initial choice of the musicians themselves, Mumbo Jumbo explores the nature of improvisation.
