Monday, December 15, 20148:00 pm

Allison Miller, drums

Myra Melford, piano

Jenny Scheinman, violin

Kirk Knuffke, cornet

Todd Sickafoose, bass

Drummer/composer Allison Miller presents a special night of original music showcasing her regularly touring band, Boom Tic Boom. This leading-edge quintet’s music—featuring Myra Melford on piano, Jenny Scheinman on violin, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, Todd Sickafoose on bass and Miller on drums—is at turns challenging and accessible, teasing and tough, virtuosic but never overbearing. It thrives on surprises spawned from collective improvisation and projects a vast array of tonal colors, rhythmic and harmonic shape-shifts and rich emotions. Miller’s will be premiering new original works as well as music from her most recent release, No Morphine, No Lilies (4.5 stars/Best of 2013- Downbeat Magazine) and BOOM TIC BOOM (“Top 10 Jazz Album of 2010-LA Times).

Allison Miller gathers inspiration from a wide array of genres. Hailing from a robust Washington DC Jazz tradition, she engages her deep roots in groove and improvisation as a vehicle to explore all music. Described by critics as a charismatic and rhythmically propulsive drummer with melodic sensibility, Allison has been named “Rising Star Drummer” and “Top 20 Jazz Drummers” in Downbeat Magazine’s acclaimed Critics Poll. Miller’s band, Boom Tic Boom, features her compositions and is a 2014 recipient of Chamber Music America’s “Presenter Consortium for Jazz” grant. All three of her band’s commercial releases (No Morphine No Lilies, Live at Willisau, and Boom Tic Boom,) have been met with critical acclaim winning coveted placement in “Top 10 Jazz Album” lists, including, Downbeat, LA Times, Jazz Journalist Assoc., and Something Else. The band has been featured on NPR’s “Tiny Desk Concert” series with Bob Boilen, “JazzSet” with Dee Dee Bridgewater, and “The Checkout: Live” with Josh Jackson. “No Morphine No Lilies demonstrates that her (Allison Miller) craftiness as a percussionist is met by her ingenuity as a composer and group conceptualist.” -The New Yorker

The performance of Allison Miller’s BOOM TIC BOOM, presented by Roulette Intermedium, Inc. in collaboration with Outpost Productions, Inc. and Angel City Arts, is supported by Presenter Consortium for Jazz, a program of Chamber Music America, funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
