$15 General Admission
$10 Members/Students/Seniors

Old-world cabaret collides with modernity in this unique Brooklyn-based ensemble. Barbez wrings elements of European folksong, post-war classical, and experimental rock into an otherworldly soundscape. The group was founded in 1997 by guitarist Dan Kaufman and has released four albums; most recently “Force of Light” (Tzadik), an homage to the Holocaust poet Paul Celan. The band has also contributed to several dance and theatre pieces including “The Making of Americans,” a Gertrude Stein-inspired dance choreographed by Juliette Mapp and presented at Dance Theatre Workshop last April. They have also created music for several episodes of the serial play “Chang in a Void Moon,” written and directed by the experimental theatre pioneer John Jesurun.

For this performance, Barbez will be performing new works from a forthcoming album for John Zorn’s Tzadik label inspired by ancient Roman-Jewish melodies, the Nazi occupation of Rome, and Italian neorealist cinema. They will also play several pieces from a separate work-in-progress concerning the wars in the Middle East since 9/11 as well as two excerpts from “The Making of Americans.” Joining the group as special guests will be vocalist Shelley Hirsch and dancers Juliette Mapp and Kayvon Pourazar. With: Dan Kaufman, guitar; Danny Tunick, vibes, marimba; Peter Hess, clarinet, percussion; Catherine McRae, violin; Peter Lettre, bass; John Bollinger, drums.
