Laura Andel New Music Works in collaboration with Daniel Binelli (bandoneon), Elliott Sharp (guitars), Carl Maguire (Fender Rhodes), Andrew Drury (percussion)
New York-based, Argentinean composer Laura Andel premieres new works for an eclectic instrumentation, featuring musicians of the Buenos Aires, and the New York music-scenes, creating a crossover of geographies and personal languages.
By conceptualizing music that balance composition, textural improvisation, and compositional conducting, Andel creates unique sonic landscapes, sometimes ritualistic, built from musical elements from avant-garde to contemporary classical. In it, each performer’s distinctive voice forms the fabric of these sonic landscapes.

LAURA ANDEL is a composer and conductor from Buenos Aires, Argentina. After living and working in her native Buenos Aires, and for several years in Boston, Ms. Andel moved to New York in 2000. One of Andel’s main interests is exploring diverse combinations of instruments and formats for her orchestras, as well as working with musicians from different musical and cultural backgrounds. Laura Andel has received grants and awards for her work, from the BMI Foundation, Unesco-Aschberg, Rockefeller Foundation, American Music Center, Massachusetts Cultural Council, New York State Music Fund, and the Senate for Culture of the City of Berlin. Her music has been performed in New York, Boston, Berlin, Caracas, Buenos Aires, and other cities. The Laura Andel Orchestra has released 3 CDs to date: Somnambulist, In::Tension:., and Doble Mano.

DANIEL BINELLI is a bandoneón player, composer, arranger and musical director from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Binelli is a central and long-standing figure of tango music both in Buenos Aires and the international music scene. He has performed for many years with some of the most remarkable tango orchestras and ensembles, including the Osvaldo Pugliese Tango Orchestra, and the Astor Piazzolla´s New Tango Sextet. Currently, he is the musical director of Tango Metropolis, the Daniel Binelli Quintet, and the Binelli-Ferman Duo, and regularly tours in Europe, United States, and Japan. ELLIOTT SHARP is a composer, performer, and producer central to the experimental music scene in New York. He leads the projects Orchestra Carbon, Tectonics, and Terraplane, and has pioneered ways of applying fractal geometry, chaos theory, and genetic metaphors to musical composition and interaction. Elliott Sharp’s music has been featured at numerous international venues and festivals, including MaerzMusik, the New Music Stockholm, the Donaueschingen Festival, the Hessischer Rundfunk Klangbiennale, the Darmstadt Ferienkürse für Neue Musik, and the Venice Biennale. CARL MAGUIRE is active as a performer and collaborator with a variety of New York creative artists. His primary focus as a composer and band leader for the past few years has been realizing Floriculture, a band that plays exclusively Maguire’s compositions, which call on the musicians to integrate extended sections of exact notation with improvisational passages to create a vivid and compelling aural landscape. Carl performs on piano and Rhodes, with both traditional and less-traditional techniques, and sometimes on accordion. He has performed with Barbez, Momenta Quartet, Tyshawn Sorey, and was a featured soloist in Butch Morris’ New York Skyscraper. www.carlmaguire.co m
ANDREW DRURY is a percussionist, composer, improviser, and educator who works primarily in avant-jazz and free improvisation, with regular forays into other genres and media. In addition to “conventional” techniques he employs friction and air pressure in combination with a variety of gears, clamps, construction site detritus, and metal objects to conjure an extreme range of frequency and texture from the drums. He has become one of the very few drummers known for circular breathing and bowing a metal dust pan. Drury has performed internationally, made five CDs as a bandleader, and appeared on over 40 other recordings. Drury has received grants for his work from the NEA, NYSCA, NYFA, the Seattle Arts Commission, the Artist Trust, the Puffin Foundation, and others. www.andrewdrury.com
