MIMA Presents Antibalas

Saturday, October 12, 20138:00 pm

For thirteen years, MIMA Music has provided music and media education programs to under-served schools and communities, including six NYC schools. Surround Sounds Brooklyn is a benefit concert to raise $10,000 to expand our MIMA Music programs to a total of 10 schools in the NYC area by Spring 2014.

MIMA Presents Surround Sounds Brooklyn, a concert series that celebrates global music traditions, showcases world-class performers, and gathers communities with the purpose of supporting MIMA arts education and music improvisation programs in underserved schools. This concert alone will provide 1) 50% of the funding for 10 semester-long programs reaching 150 students across 4 boroughs in NYC; and 2) 100% of the funding for the training of 5 new MIMA Teaching Artists.

Headlining Surround Sounds Brooklyn is 11-piece ensemble Antibalas. Born in a Brooklyn warehouse in 1997, the 12-piece ensemble Antibalas is credited with introducing Afrobeat to a wider global audience. Members of Antibalas served as musical directors and the house band in the Broadway hit FELA! and penned original music for the show.

Opening for Antibalas will be TUELO & Her Cousins, an eight-piece band comprised of MIMA Teaching Artists and fronted by soulful South African musician Tuelo Minah. Though she writes and sings primarily in English, Tuelo often breaks into her native tongue, Setswana – blending African melodies with American soul in a way that puts her unique and powerful voice on prominent display.

Doors: 7:30pm
Tuelo & Her Cousins: 8-9pm
Antibalas: 9:30-11:30
