Rele Ountò, The First Annual Frisner Augustin Memorial Drum Festival

Makandal invites you to its first annual drum festival in honor of its late Artistic Director, Master Drummer Frisner Augustin. The program will feature Raram, one of Brooklyn’s premier raras; Racine Fanmi Brignol with Maestro Musical Jean Mary Brignol; Makandal Drummers and vocalist Taïna Ligonde; Master Drummer Catelus (“Ti Tonton”) Laguerre, possibly the most senior Haitian master drummer in the United States; and the Julio Jean Haitian Dance Theater with a new piece celebrating the Asotò (the most sacred of the Vodou drums) with inspiration from Jacques Roumain’s classic 1943 monograph Le Sacrifice du Tambour Assoto(r).

This program is presented by Makandal, supported, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts, and, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts.
