ICElab Premieres Tyshawn Sorey and Carlos Iturralde

Sunday, November 18, 20128:00 pm

International Contemporary Ensemble
Carlos Iturralde and Tyshawn Sorey, composers
Karina Canellakis, conductor

Carlos Iturralde is one of the most promising young composers to emerge from Mexico’s booming experimental music scene. His music explores richly colorful acoustic spectra with an often violent intensity. His two-part piece for ICElab incorporates elements of richly microtonal music belonging to the son jarocho tradition from Veracrúz, México. One of the primary aspects of the work is a unique tuning system that generates beating tones – the interference between two tones of slightly different frequencies.

Widely considered one of the most talented and influential experimental jazz musicians of his generation, Tyshawn Sorey is a composer whose innovative work defies all boundaries. His music embraces a basic paradox in contemporary experimental music, bridging a highly technical precision with the raw, virtuosic energy of improvisation so central to his work in avant-jazz collectives such as Fieldwork and the Steve Lehman Octet.

Program:

Carlos Iturralde: Cupid’s Deeds, for flute, oboe, clarinet, guitar, violin, viola, cello, bass, percussion, piano, and harp (2012)
Carlos Iturralde: Cupid’s Deeds II WORLD PREMIERE
Tyshawn Sorey: ICElab Cycle, for flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, tuba, guitar, violin, percussion, piano (2012) WORLD PREMIERE
