John Fonville
Living in Fire (EIN 014/CD)
"...The music on Living In Fire represents a decade's work. All of the
music on this CD is music to which I am profoundly attracted to. Each
work appeals to aesthetic and technical concerns very dear to my musical
life. As a performer I am drawn to difficult and complex music not for
the technical challenges but for the changes in my physical and emotional
that the music causes. Music at its best is transformational. We are
altered in some meaningful way because of its presence. The works on
this CD are certainly transforming to me." -John Fonville
Flutist/composer John Fonville is dedicated to extending the language
and technique of the flute. He is a master of all the recent technical
developments and an explorer in their use in various musical contexts:
microtonal music, improvisation, and new compositions that push the
boundaries. He performs on a complete set of quarter tone flutes from
bass flute to piccolo and was instrumental in their development. His
numerous premiers include composers such as Ben Johnston, Sal Martirano,
Joji Yuasa, Roger Reynolds, Hiroyuki Itoh, Paul Koonce and numerous
others. He is a member of the TONE ROAD RAMBLERS, the EOLUS QUINTET,
and SONOR, the resident contemporary music ensemble at the University
of California, where he is a faculty member. Widely recorded, he can
be heard on CRI, New World, Neuma, OO Discs, Advance, TR2, Orion, and
Opus One.
"....Flutist John Fonville has long impressed me as a new music advocate
whose dedication and skills operate as the ideal match. A spectacular
virtuosity." Fanfare
