Welcome to Roulette’s first Annual Impact Report.

For nearly five decades, Roulette has created space for artists to take risks, develop new ideas, and share bold and adventurous work. What began as an artist-run laboratory for experimentation and discovery in a Tribeca loft is now an internationally acclaimed 501(c)(3) cultural incubator: a 12,000-square-foot, 400-seat, multi-level theater in Downtown Brooklyn that supports experimental artists without compromise.

For much of that history, Roulette has been more focused on doing the work than talking about it. With this report, we’re sharing a fuller picture of what that work looks like today—some of the moments we’re proudest of, the inner workings that make them possible, and the new experiments shaping what comes next.

Roulette has grown, but our fundamental dedication to artists has remained the same. We simply have more resources, infrastructure, and reach to put behind them. Our mission has also recently expanded to formalize something that has long been central to Roulette: the stewardship of our free public Archive.

Today, Roulette’s mission is threefold:

  1. Support artists and present performances of innovative music, movement, and media art.
  2. Build audiences interested in experiencing new work.
  3. Trace the evolution of experimental performance through a freely accessible public archive.

This report speaks to each part of our mission. It offers a first-ever look at the year in its entirety, how Roulette supported artists and the broader field, how audiences experienced extraordinary artistic work, and how that work will continue to live for years to come.

We are deeply grateful to the artists, audiences, members, donors, partners, staff, board, and volunteers who make Roulette possible. Your impact is the real driving force behind this report. Thank you.

A Letter from Matt Mehlan

This was a year of significant change at Roulette. In October 2025, I stepped into the combined role of Executive and Artistic Director—an opportunity I accepted with enormous respect for Roulette’s singular importance as a home for experimental work, and with a deep sense of purpose and possibility for its future.

FY26 was a year of experimentation, both onstage and off. Artistically, I worked to expand what audiences could encounter on Roulette’s stage while remaining accountable to the artists, histories, and communities that make Roulette what it is today. We made marketing and audience development a greater institutional priority—work you can feel in the space and see reflected in our record-breaking audience growth this past year. We continued public workshops that invited audiences into the ideas and practices that have shaped the avant-garde, and we made these workshops and the performances of our Awarded Artists completely free for Roulette members.

Alongside this growth, we took meaningful steps across the organization to strengthen the experience at Roulette: we worked with our staff, Board, artists, and community to create a new Code of Conduct that articulates how we share space, and we launched a new Hospitality and Audience Services team dedicated to making Roulette more welcoming and connected for everyone.

Through all of this, Roulette’s essential character remains unchanged. It’s a place where artists can experiment freely, audiences can encounter something genuinely unexpected, and adventurous performance becomes part of a living history. I am proud of what we accomplished together this year, encouraged by the ways our community responded, and excited to build on that momentum in the seasons ahead.

Matt Mehlan Executive and Artistic Director

The Roulette Effect

Roulette’s mission is carried out across the full life of a performance: before it happens, during the evening, and after it leaves the stage.

Before

  • Contractually guaranteed artist fees, committed before the performance and independent of attendance
  • Bespoke marketing of each project to more than 200 press outlets
  • Production support tailored to the work
  • Space and time to develop, rehearse, and prepare
  • Technical resources matched to the needs of the project
  • Institutional belief in the artist and the work

Guaranteed artist fees are a staple of Roulette’s identity. Committing to an artist before the performance takes place affirms that their work has value—regardless of attendance, popularity, or the pressures of the artistic economy.

During

  • Expert production and A/V teams dedicated to realizing each artist’s work as intended
  • A free livestream that brings every performance to audiences around the world
  • A comfortable, welcoming, and serious environment in which audiences can encounter adventurous work

In March 2026, Roulette launched a new Hospitality and Audience Services Team, dedicated to improving the experience of everyone who comes through our doors—from artists and audiences to members, donors, rental clients, and community partners.

After

  • A high-quality, multichannel video and audio recording provided to the artist
  • Inclusion in the Roulette Archive, where the performance is contextualized within nearly five decades of experimental history

The Roulette Archive also provides source material for Roulette’s podcast, radio shows, broadcasts, and other editorial work—extending the life, reach, and visibility of each artist’s work.

In FY26, Roulette brought 918 artists to its stage for 139 performances, provided $683,897 in artists and artist-facing support, presented 128 premieres, grew average attendance by 26%, increased membership by 61%, increased Gala income by 31.6%, grew ticket donation add-ons by 529.1%, and ended the year with an $88,162 operating surplus within a $2.8M operating budget.

Roulette directly invested $683,897 in artists and artist-facing support during FY26. This included $410,002 in direct artist compensation, $69,947 in direct production support, an estimated $181,976 in technical, A/V, production, and communications services, and $21,972 in marketing expenses directly supporting artists and their work.

Roulette presented 128 world, U.S., and New York premiere items across 48 performances during its 47th season. This includes 109 world-premiere works, projects, and improvised presentations; five first-ever versions or configurations; seven U.S. premieres; and seven New York premieres.

Multi-Night Runs and Season-Long Focuses

Roulette has traditionally presented singular, one-night events. In FY26, we began exploring multi-evening runs and sustained artistic focuses, giving artists more time to develop and present their work and audiences more opportunities to engage deeply with a project, practice, or body of work. This shift reflects a growing interest in depth alongside the extraordinary breadth of Roulette’s programming.

Centering Honored Artists

Roulette deepened its approach to honoring major members of our field by embedding them throughout the season, culminating in their celebration at the Roulette Gala. In FY26, we honored the original Robert Ashley Band and Thomas and Kamala Buckner through performances, workshops, screenings, and the ongoing Interpretations series, creating multiple opportunities for audiences to engage with their work, influence, and contributions over the course of the year.

Festivals

Roulette is the proud home of many festivals. Some are our own—like MIXOLOGY, our decades-running annual celebration of the interplay of music, movement, and media that defines Roulette. Others—like Bang on a Can’s Long Play, Robert Browning Associates’ Flamenco Festival, and M³: Mutual Mentorship for Musicians’ annual festival—are important peers in our field who bring their work to Roulette, where our expert production team helps bring ambitious undertakings to life.

Established in 1983 with first-time support from the Jerome Foundation, Roulette’s 2026 Awarded Artists Programs are generously supported by The Jerome Foundation and The New York State Council on the Arts. Prior support was provided by The Mertz Gilmore Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, and The New York Community Trust. Awarded Artists are selected through a nomination process with support from Roulette’s Artistic Advisory Council. Nominators are chosen by Roulette’s Artistic Director each year to be representative of the multiplicity of styles, genres, and identities of artists that have presented work on Roulette’s stage since the organization’s founding. Panelists are artists at varying stages in their careers who are deeply familiar with the field and Roulette’s creative community—and as artists, they are uniquely sympathetic to the difficulties that emerging artists face.

Preserving the History of Experimentalism

Roulette archival materials and merchandise announcement
Roulette’s Archive brings together recordings, images, and ephemera

Roulette’s Archive is one of the organization’s greatest treasures: a free, digital, and priceless record of decades of experimental music, movement, and media, and a living repository of new ideas that grows with every season.

Since its public launch in 2019, Roulette has spent years cataloging, digitizing, and bringing this extraordinary collection of more than 4,200 recordings, videos, ephemera, artifacts, and photographs to the world for free. In a remarkable act of foresight, Roulette procured artist permissions from the very beginning, meaning the earliest public recordings in the collection date back to Roulette’s first years in the late 1970s.

Historic recordings now live alongside an extensive body of born-digital work created today, allowing audiences, artists, researchers, and future generations to encounter the evolution of experimental practice across time. In FY26 alone, more than 130 performances were documented and added to this living collection.

The Archive is also an essential tool for working artists. Roulette utilizes a sophisticated six-camera robotic system to document and broadcast performances, operated by an expert A/V team that edits in real time and combines professional multichannel audio, multi-camera video, livestreaming, and long-term digital preservation. Artists leave Roulette with high-quality multichannel audio and video files of their work, at no cost to them. In FY26, Roulette upgraded its video capture to 4K.

It is central to our mission that the Archive remains free for everyone.

Lead support for the Roulette Archive is provided by the Destina Foundation.

Roulette follows Dublin Core standards for metadata. The physical Roulette Archive is housed on-site at Roulette Intermedium in Downtown Brooklyn; a backup is maintained in-house on our internally networked NAS server, with a third copy stored in the cloud.

Looking ahead: Roulette is seeking to purchase an additional 200+ TB NAS server to support the continued growth of its born-digital media collection.

People are tuning in, all over the world. In FY26, Roulette’s livestreams and archived videos generated 259,100 views and 31,500 hours of watch time, reached audiences in 40 countries, and recorded 51,219 international views and 5,500 international watch hours. Roulette ended the year with 7,796 YouTube subscribers.

YouTube subscribers compared with FY25, up by 2,000 subscribers.

Together with the growth in livestream and archive viewership, these gains point to a widening community of people actively seeking out new ideas in music, movement, and media at Roulette.

Activating the Archive

In addition to offering free livestreams, hosting our free digital archive, and presenting 139 performances, Roulette actively contextualizes its 47-year, 4,200-plus-recording collection through three radio programs, a multi-award-winning podcast, television broadcasts, and partnerships. Here is how Roulette activated the archive in FY26.

01

The Roulette Tapes

Produced by Roulette co-founder and archivist David Weinstein and radio producer Susan James, Roulette's multi-award-winning podcast The Roulette Tapes combines artist interviews with excerpts from Roulette performances, using the Archive to create focused audio journeys through experimental music and the people who make it.

Introducing: Hospitality at Roulette

In March of 2026, Roulette launched a new Hospitality and Audience Services Team, formalizing and expanding our efforts to improve how artists, audiences, members, donors, rental clients, and community partners experience Roulette.

With support from the Booth Ferris Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies, the team brings work that had previously lived across several areas of the organization into a more coordinated structure, connecting ticketing and audience services, front-of-house operations, artist hospitality, special events, rentals, membership, and development. The team is steered by Joseph Smith, Senior Manager of Special Events and Hospitality, and Marandi Hostetter, Development and Audience Services Associate, whose complementary roles connect the administrative work of the organization with the experience of people entering and engaging with Roulette.

Their first months have focused on strengthening systems, clarifying responsibilities, and building greater continuity between Roulette’s daytime operations and the performances, events, and interactions that happen throughout the building.

What this means

01

All roads lead to Hospitality.

General emails and phone calls to Roulette—including inquiries related to the box office, membership, development, and other needs—are routed through the Hospitality team, giving people a consistent point of contact across the organization.

02

A more embedded House Management team.

In FY27, Roulette welcomes 3 staff members into a newly created House Manager role that bridges the organization’s administrative workday and front-of-house operations, creating greater continuity across daytime operations, performances, and events.

03

Better systems for ticketing, membership, and giving.

With support from Bloomberg Philanthropies Digital Accelerator Program, we unified and upgraded Roulette’s CRM and ticketing systems, making it easier to attend, join, renew, and give. Updates include Apple Wallet tickets, ticket scanners, merchandise preferences at checkout, and the Roulette Benefits Hub for ticket and seat requests anytime, anywhere. All memberships can now renew automatically, and qualifying donations automatically activate patron benefits. We also launched Artist and Student/Senior memberships to welcome a wider and more inclusive community, along with Roulette Unlimited, which brings free entry and other benefits together in one year-round program.

04

The Roulette Bar.

We tested new offerings including batch cocktails and charcuterie boards, and developed new partnerships that expanded what we can offer audiences and rental clients. In FY26, bar income from Roulette-presented shows increased 61.2%.

05

Safety and preparedness remain part of the standard.

Roulette already conducts mandatory annual emergency-preparedness training, maintains detailed emergency plans, requires food-handler certifications, and supports staff in maintaining F-03, S-95, and other fire-safety certifications. The new House Manager structure carries those standards forward through ongoing training, emergency preparedness, and clear responsibility for front-of-house readiness during performances and events.

06

A more intentional artist arrival and backstage experience.

We are improving day-of-show communication, making artist arrival clearer and more welcoming, strengthening backstage preparation and readiness, and making the green room a more welcoming and supportive space for artists before and after performances.

Artists and artist-facing support

In FY26, Roulette generated $2.89 million in revenue and support and invested $2.80 million in artists, staff, programming, production, and the operation of our theater. The year closed with an operating surplus of $88,162—approximately 3.05% of total revenue and support—strengthening Roulette’s ability to sustain its work and plan responsibly for the future.

More than half of Roulette’s FY26 resources came from contributed support, including individuals, foundations, government partners, and special events. Earned and other revenue—including venue rentals, concert income and memberships, concessions and merchandise, and interest and dividends—provided the remaining 44.5%.

These services are central to Roulette’s model. Artists receive more than a performance fee: they work with experienced production and technical teams, receive sound, lighting, video, and recording support, and benefit from bespoke communications and marketing support that brings their work to audiences in person and online.

Reserves and Financial Safeguards

The Future Fund

$325,000

In 2019, with support from Howard Gilman Foundation and Roulette’s generous Board and community of supporters, Roulette established the Future Fund: a $325,000 cash reserve designed to exist in perpetuity and safeguard against emergencies.

EIDL Loan

$148,000

Roulette also maintains a $150,000, 30-year, fixed-rate EIDL loan taken out during the pandemic. The remaining $148,000 provides an additional financial safeguard against emergencies and unforeseen operating pressures.

Capital Fund

$39,080 remaining

As the Baisley Powell Elebash Fund was sunsetting in 2020–21, Roulette received a $500,000 capital award intended to support improvements and maintenance over the following 5 years. Careful stewardship has allowed Roulette to extend the life of the fund slightly beyond that original timeframe, with $39,080 remaining. Looking ahead, Roulette seeks to establish a permanent capital fund that would exist in perpetuity and help protect the operating budget from future capital needs.

Figures are based on Roulette’s FY26 unaudited internal actuals and may be subject to adjustment. Revenue and expense lines have been consolidated for presentation and do not represent audited financial statements or a formal functional-expense allocation. Roulette's full financial statements are made publicly available via the NYS Attorney General's office, ProPublica, and Candid, where we maintain the highest level of transparency.
