Talujon Described by the New York Times as possessing an “edgy, unflagging energy,” Talujon has committed itself to the growth of contemporary percussion music through diverse performance, commissioning, educational, and outreach activities. Talujon is composed of percussionists Ian Antonio, Caitlin Cawley, David Cossin, Matthew Gold, Tom Kolor, Michael Lipsey, and Matt Ward. Highlights of Talujon’s recent engagements include appearances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival, Bang on a Can’s Marathon and Long Play Festivals, Carnegie Hall, ISSUE Project Room, Roulette, Miller Theatre, and New York Historical Society. International performances include Taipei’s Lantern Festival and Italy’s Sound Res Festival. Talujon partners with New York City Public Schools and the Midori and Friends organization to produce educational programming across New York City’s five boroughs. The ensemble’s playing can be heard on the Cantaloupe, Tzadik, Unseen Worlds, Another Timbre, New World, Bridge, Albany, and Capstone record labels.
Brooklyn-based musician Brian Chase is the drummer for Grammy-nominated rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, NYC’s experimental music community and Drums and Drones, a solo project with a compositional focus on the harmonic resonances of drums and percussion. As an exceptionally versatile performer, Brian’s music has taken him across the world to such notable stages as the Sydney Opera House, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Coachella as well as countless independent art spaces of music’s ‘underground’ communities. In 2018, Chase started an independent record label, Chaikin Records, which spotlights pioneering figures of the avant-garde. The inaugural release on Chaikin Records was Drums and Drones: Decade, a triple album with 144 page book, described in The Wire as “an indispensable statement on how drummers hear sound.” Additional releases by Chase on Chaikin Records include duo albums with harpist Zeena Parkins, pianist Anthony Coleman, saxophonist Catherine Sikora and a collaboration with visual artist Keti Katveli. As an educator Chase has taught at Bennington College and was a guest artist at So Percussion’s SoSI festival and Yarn/Wire’s annual summer institute. Chase’s writings have appeared in John Zorn’s Arcana series, culture blog Talkhouse and drumming trade magazine Modern Drummer.
John Hollenbeck is a composer, drummer, and percussionist whose work spans jazz, contemporary classical music, chamber music, and large ensemble composition. Since emerging as a bandleader in 2001, he has led a wide range of acclaimed projects, including the Claudia Quintet and the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, both recognized for their innovative approaches to ensemble music. Hollenbeck has composed extensively for jazz ensembles, choirs, wind ensembles, chamber groups, and orchestras, receiving commissions from major festivals, universities, and arts organizations in North America and Europe. His recordings and compositions have earned six GRAMMY nominations, including nominations for the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble and his large-ensemble arrangements. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Hollenbeck studied percussion and jazz composition and was mentored by composer and arranger Bob Brookmeyer and composer Meredith Monk. His honors include a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, the ASCAP Jazz Vanguard Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He taught at the Jazz Institute Berlin from 2005–2016 and later joined the faculty of McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. Hollenbeck continues to perform, compose, and collaborate internationally as one of today’s leading creative musicians.
