Magda Mayas: Chant

Monday, April 29, 20248:00 pm

Magda Mayas returns to Roulette to premiere “Chant,” a new work for solo piano, objects, transducers and playback. “Chant” was developed in 2023 at Harringtons Lane artist residency in New South Wales, Australia. The playback was recorded on 16 different pianos and focuses on tunings and recurring harmonic structures.

Mayas will also perform improvisations and other compositions.

“Over the last two decades it’s hard to think of a pianist who has made more consistent sonic discoveries beneath the lid of the piano… An integral figure of Berlin’s echtzeitmusik music community …she’s developed the beguiling practice combining preparations and jerry-rigged tools to generate an ever expanding encyclopedia of sound.” – Peter Margasak, The Wire

A livestream will be available free of charge at 8pm on the day of the performance and archived for future viewing. Watch below or on YouTube.

Magda Mayas is a pianist and composer performer living in Berlin. Over the past 20 years she developed a vocabulary utilizing both the inside as well as the exterior parts of the piano, using amplification, preparations and objects that become extensions of the instrument itself. Mayas performs internationally solo and in collaboration with a large number of musicians and composers. Current projects are Spill – a duo with drummer Tony Buck, a duo with Christine Abdelnour (sax), and the Splitter Orchestra Berlin. She teachers improvisation at Lucerne University for Applied Sciences and Art and has released over 40 CDs to date.
