GENERATE embodies Roulette’s belief that ambitious, complex experiments in art should be provided the money, tools, space, and time to investigate, fail, learn, re-launch, and achieve.
Launched in 2014 in honor of Frances Richard*, GENERATE supports ambitious, complex, and often large-scale experimental projects by artists at all stages of their careers through residencies, commissions, fellowships, and other critical production and technical support. Composers writing operas, choreographers working with large ensembles, artists questioning the definitions of their disciplines and exploring new technologies — these works take time, money, and resources that Roulette has worked hard to provide for today’s most innovative creators. GENERATE encourages and nourishes these artists and their projects, and shares their ideas with the world in our state-of-the-art theater.
Since its inception, GENERATE has supported 800 artists in their creativity onstage, has brought over 12,000 audience members together, and has presented over 115 performances, 70% of which were world premieres, including Henry Threadgill’s 2016 Pulitzer Prize-winning work, In for a Penny, In for a Pound.
But we can’t GENERATE without you—in the last year alone, audiences like you have helped fund over 30 new and adventurous works. As Roulette celebrates its 45th anniversary, we invite you to be brave, be vulnerable, and be bold with us. And most importantly:
Empower artists. Support GENERATE.
