Robert Browning Associates Presents: Espiritu Gitano Flamenco – Felah-Menguz (Fugitive Peasant)

Saturday, November 15, 20148:00 pm

Directed by guitarist-composer Arturo Martinez who has been a noted figure in the New York flamenco scene since the 1980s, the 10-member Espiritu Gitano ensemble of musicians, singers and dancers reveals the beauty and boldness of flamenco. The takes its title from the origin of the word “flamenco” – felah menguz – which translates as “fugitive peasant.” In defiance of ethnic conflicts, Espiritu Gitano reflects the essence of flamenco by bringing together many influences, ranging from traditions of India and the Middle East, to those of the Moors, Jews and Gypsies of Andalusia. Featured are Arturo Martinez (guitar), Barbara Martinez (vocals, dance), Maya de Silva (dance), Sholeh Dalai (Persian vocals), Najma Ayashah (Indian Gypsy dance), Elisabet Torras (dance), Elena Lentini (Middle Eastern dance), Alfonso Cid (vocal), Sean Kupiz (bass, percussion) and Tom Chess (oud-lute, nay – flute).
