Brian Schober/Joan Ross Sorkin: White Witch (A Monodrama)

Dutch pianist Reinier Van Houdt performs Maneuvers for Small Hands (1961), one of Robert Ashley’s first major explorations. The work is a catalogue of puzzles for the contemporary musician, consisting of 110 cards in which 10 fundamental actions are spun out into 110 movements.

Composer Brian Schober and librettist Joan Ross Sorkin‘s monodrama about voodoo, murder and revenge is scored for mezzo-soprano and percussion. Based on the 19th century Jamaican legend of Annie Palmer, notoriously known as “The White Witch of Rose Hall.”
