MEREDITH MONK: A Benefit For Roulette

Thursday, January 10, 20137:00 pm

Join Roulette for a dinner, performance, and champagne reception with composer, singer, and “Magician of the Voice” Meredith Monk in this special benefit for Roulette. Also tonight, we’ll be honoring ASCAP Vice President and Director of Concert Music Frances Richard.

7:00 PM – PRE-CONCERT COCKTAIL RECEPTION
8:00 PM – DINNER AND PERFORMANCE

For the occasion of Roulette’s first annual benefit, Monk will be performing a sneak preview of her newest evening-length work, On Behalf of Nature. In this work, Monk offers a poetic meditation on the environment. Using her recent, highly acclaimed composition Realm Variations for vocalists and instrumentalists as a point of departure, she employs contrasts in range from high to low to create an expansive sound world of different musical realms. Within this world, Monk evokes the Buddhist notion of the existence of different realm categories—the idea of joining heaven and earth by way of human beings.

A pioneer in “extended vocal technique” and “interdisciplinary performance,” composer, singer, director/choreographer Meredith Monk creates works that thrive at the intersection of music and movement, image and object, light and sound in an effort to discover and weave together new modes of perception. Her groundbreaking exploration of the voice as an instrument, as an eloquent language in and of itself, expands the boundaries of musical composition, creating landscapes of sound that unearth feelings, energies, and memories for which there are no words.
