Since 1971, Creative Music Studio has engaged musicians and listeners from all backgrounds to deepen and broaden their musical sensitivity, expression and understanding through mentorship, workshops, and concerts worldwide.

CMS honors that legacy by embracing the diversity of sound, style, personality, and identity that make up the rich fabric of today’s creative music.

CMS was founded by Ornette Coleman, Karl Berger and Ingrid Sertso. Members of the original board of advisors included Buckminster Fuller, John Cage, Gil Evans, and Don Cherry. By the time it closed its 45-acre physical campus in 1984, the studio had worked with countless luminaries of the creative music world. While some musicians participated only in brief workshops and others came and lived at CMS for years, thousands of CMS participants were influenced by its spirit of exploration and collaboration.

CMS lives on! In the past year, CMS presented:

38 live events
64 master artists
141 workshop participants from all backgrounds
681 concert attendees
17 locations in 13 cities
