Contemporary East presents an evening of new improvisational music incorporating Eastern aesthetics and techniques. These innovative artists are developing a tradition that treasures the measure and quality of the breath, honors vacancy and silence, and explores alternate approaches to the art of improvisation.
The evening will include:
A collaboration between Ikue Mori (electronics), Charmaine Lee (voice and electronics), and Nava Dunkelman (percussion).
A performance of Percussion Peace, a solo by Reggie Nicholson (percussion). Nicholson will also perform two short improvised collaborations with Yuko Fujiyama (piano) and Nava Dunkelman (percussion).

Founded in 2022 by Yuko Fujiyama, Contemporary East highlights the beauty and depth of Eastern expressions in improvisational music. We seek to cultivate meaningful opportunities for artists of diverse backgrounds and disciplines to collaborate and share their work through public programs, while building awareness of aesthetics in Asian-inspired music.
