Constraints II
Developed during an exciting one month residency at Tokyo’s Morishita Studio, Constraints II is the Japanese counterpart to Constraints I and III. Choreographed by Nina Winthrop. Music by Jon Gibson. Costumes by Naoko Nagata. Constraints II was created with support from Asian Cultural Council and Saison Foundation, and premiered at The Flea Theater, New York City in June 2007. The piece runs for 11 minutes.

Three Lives and Something – 1998, Danspace Project, NYC
Four lanes separate the dancers’ movements, derived from everyday activities. Throughout the piece, the four dancers move back and forth in the parallel lanes of their physically separated, yet thematically connected, lives. Original music: Jon Gibson; Costumes: Naoko Nagata. The piece runs for 17 minutes.

Choreographer Nina Winthrop formed her company, Nina Winthrop and Dancers,
in 1991. Her works have been presented in venues throughout New York City
and Los Angeles, including Danspace Project, Joyce SoHo, Brooklyn Academy
of Music, Movement Research at the Judson Church, Mabou Mines’ Toronada
Theater at PS 122, and The Flea Theater. Her dance films have been
screened in the US and abroad. Nina was awarded a Bessie Schönberg
Choreographers’ Residency at The Yard in 2004, a Dancenow/NYC’s Silo
Artist Residency in 2005, and participated in the Schönberg Choreographers
Lab at DTW in 2005. Nina is also the curator of Dance Conversations @ The
Flea, a performance, film and discussion series. She is on the Board of
Directors of New Dance Alliance and Danspace Project. A graduate of
Bennington College, Nina danced with Wendy Perron, Susan Rethorst, Yoshiko
Chuma, Sally Silvers and Kei Takei, with whom she toured the USA and
Japan, and studied with Erick Hawkins, Merce Cunningham and Deborah Hay.
