Kato Hideki: Hope & Despair

Sunday, March 5, 20238:00 pm

Originally inspired by Robert Frank’s philosophy on photography, Kato Hideki envisioned making “photographic music” in the 1990’s: the result was an album, Hope & Despair, featuring Zeena Parkins, Masahiko Kono, Dougie Bowne and John Zorn. The piece premiered at Roulette in 1996. Fast forward to 2023, Kato revises the work to celebrate the LP reissue of the original recording on Joyful Noise Recordings.

“unique, unpretentiously brilliant, and curiously out of time, as if the music could be from thirty years ago, or yesterday, or tomorrow.” – Fred Frith

“The pieces are magnetic, with a kind of ritualistic level of concentration and repose. This music doesn’t just ‘hold up;’ it will sound haunting and relevant as long as there are ears to listen.” – Nels Cline

Lineup:
Kato Hideki: acoustic bass
Doug Wieselman: clarinet & electronics
Masahiko Kono: trombone & electronics
Gordon Beeferman: piano
Ryan Sawyer: drums & percussion
