Leo Chang with Efraín Rozas: Primitive Technologies

Thursday, February 20, 20258:00 pm

Korean improviser/electronic musician and 2024-2025 Roulette Resident Leo Chang presents a new evening-length performance with Peruvian interdisciplinary artist/researcher/robotics maker Efraín Rozas. Both of them use custom-built electronic instrument setups derived from their respective traditions as the basis for experimental rites—the audience will experience amplified gongs, robotic percussion, interactive lighting, and movement.

Leo Chang amplified gongs, custom-built electronics, voice, reeds, and movement
Efraín Rozas design of light/robotic sculpture + live percussion and movement interaction with sculpture, which generates percussive and light patterns in real time with algorithms created on Max MSP, and reacts to human movement through MYO sensors

A livestream will be available free of charge at 8pm on the day of the performance and archived for future viewing. Watch below or on YouTube.

Leo Chang is a Korean experimental musician, improviser, composer, and sound artist based in New York. Leo holds a PhD in Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Efraín Rozas is a Peruvian interdisciplinary artist, researcher and robotics maker. His work was described as “an incredible physical presence that transformed the stage into a soundscape” by The New York Times, “a heady confluence of technology, culture and cognition” by The New Yorker, and “a deep psychonautic dive” by Wire Magazine. He is a Jerome Artist Fellow 2023-2025 for combined arts. He was a resident at The Kitchen on 2021. He has performed at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum, Museum of Contemporary art of Lima and Central Park Summerstage Fania Records 50th anniversary. His experimental salsa project La Mecánica Popular was named one of the best Latin American albums of the decade by Zona Sucia and Estereofonía.

This work was developed as part of Leo Chang’s Roulette 2024-25 Residency, made possible with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation. This performance is presented through Roulette’s GENERATE program, providing over 30 artists each year with in-depth creative and technical support.
