Wednesday, January 22, 20148:00 pm

“Accomplished vocal modernist Fay Victor manages to deconstruct the tradition of jazz song without pretension or tedium—quite a high-wire feat” –Time Out New York

Fay Victor, voice, compositions
Anders Nilsson, electric guitar, effects
Ken Filiano, double bass, effects

The Fay Victor Ensemble (FVE) perform original material written by vocalist/composer Fay Victor and bass guitarist/composer Jochem van Dijk with music geared towards improvisation and new music while embracing a rich range of song traditions from jazz, rock, blues, and pop. In this fertile bed of imagination, gorgeous melodies appear, both generously and intelligently, like gentle tides amidst an abstract ocean of sound. The FVE showcase selections from their latest recording, Absinthe & Vermouth (released on Greene Avenue Music in November 2013), which has received initial acclaim from The New York Times, JazzTimes, and the New York Jazz Record.

Vocalist, lyricist, composer, and educator Fay Victor has been hailed by The New York Times as “artistically complete” for her unique vocal approach to the blues, jazz, free improvisation and her own original material. Starting from the jazz tradition, Victor has gone on to encompass a multi-genre approach to music, lyrics, and song, which she calls “FreeSong.” Victor has released eight critically acclaimed recordings as a leader, toured extensively throughout Europe as well as Japan, India, Russia, and Mexico and has worked with a veritable who’s-who of musicians such as Anthony Braxton, Amiri Baraka, Misha Mengelberg, William Parker, Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris, Gary Lucas, John Medeski, Nicole Mitchell, Marvin Sewell, Roswell Rudd, Han Bennink, Tyshawn Sorey and more.
