Craig Harris: F Stops (Day 1)

Friday, November 2, 19908:00 pm

Craig Harris’ F Stops (1990) featuring the composer on trombone and didgeridu with percussionists Thurman Barker, Bryan Carrott, Eli Fountain, Dean Thomas.  A two-night engagement, commissioned by Roulette with funds from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust.

Craig S. Harris is a jazz trombonist who has been a major figure in avant-garde jazz since working with Sun Ra in 1976. He also has worked with Abdullah Ibrahim, David Murray, Lester Bowie, Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Charlie Haden. When Craig Harris exploded onto the jazz scene in 1976, he brought the entire history of the jazz trombone with him.  From the growling gutbucket intensity of early New Orleans music through the refined, articulate improvisation of the modern era set forth by J.J. Johnson, and into the confrontational expressionism of the ’60s avant-garde, Craig handled the total vernacular the way a skilled orator utilizes the spoken word.
