Diablo en Brooklyn epitomizes the diversity of South Brooklyn as a beacon of hope in our society. The piece carefully melds multi-cultural and multi-ethnic elements from tap dance, modern choreography and the masked tradition of Son de Los Diablos from Peru. A high-energy execution of African rhythms from coastal Perú constitutes the centerpiece of the performance. The musicians and dancers use the quijada (jaw-bone of a donkey), the Peruvian cajón (box drum) and the choreography includes passages of zapateo dancing in performance.
This landmark engagement brings together Peru’s top dancers with the Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet, Arturo O’Farrill, and members of the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra in a re-imagination of the Son de Los Diablos tradition.
Diablo en Brooklyn is brought to you by The Afro Peruvian Foundation for the Arts (APFA) and The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA). Both organizations have a commitment to support the art and culture of Afro-Latin heritage and the continued development of the the art form of Afro-Latin jazz.
