Petrified Wood is constructed from composer Eyvind Kang’s pitch mandalas based on geometric visualizations of harmonic and color/pitch/tempo relations. If single pitches are “svara” (“that which shines from within itself”-sanskrit), then these relations are their “bright shadows”. This work is dedicated to Leonard Peltier, with musicians Charles Burnham, violin; Kang on viola; Maryam Blacksure, viola; Jane Scarpantoni, cello; Okk Yung Lee, cello; Shahzad Ismaily, double bass ; Kato Hideki, double bass; Anyas Smoke, water drum; and Raz Mesinai, sound movement.”
