High Holy Days in Brooklyn: Rosh Hashanah

Thursday, September 25, 201410:00 am

92Y’s High Holy Days in Brooklyn with Rabbi Dan Ain and musician Jeremiah Lockwood return to Roulette on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn on Sep 25 (Rosh Hashanah) and Oct 3 and 4 (Yom Kippur).

Rabbi Dan, 92Y’s Director of Tradition and Innovation, holds services that mine traditional prayers and rituals for kernels of wisdom and insight that have the power to reach a generation that is not only skeptical of organized religion, but caught up in the immediacy of a media-driven world that never stops. For a sense of Rabbi Dan’s perspective, you can watch this segment from HuffPoLive explaining why we still celebrate the High Holy Days.

Joining Rabbi Dan again this year is The Sway Machinery’s Jeremiah Lockwood, along with special musical guests. Jeremiah’s music is born out of an apprenticeship with the late Piedmont Blues master Carolina Slim and an intense study of the music of his grandfather, the legendary Cantor Jacob Konigsberg. Seamlessly channeling these two influences, Jeremiah chants traditional prayers like Avinu Malkeinu, Kol Nidre and Hineni with an old-world wail—while often accompanying himself on blues guitar. To get a sense of the music he will bring to the High Holy Days in Brooklyn, check out this performance of “Aveinu-malkeinu-z’khor,” performed at the Festival of Jewish Culture in Krakow.

What people said about 92Y’s High Holy Days in Brooklyn in 2013:

“I attended the Rosh Hashanna services this week at Roulette. They were perfect for me, in the sweet spot of referring to this world but also able to completely take me away from this world to someplace I can’t describe. There were moments when I had intense “out of body” feelings of transcendence. It was the first time in my life that I heard services that spoke from my experience instead of some remembered fragment of Russian shtetl culture.” – George S.

“Just wanted to write and say thank you for providing the services at Roulette in Brooklyn for the High Holidays. We attended today’s Rosh Hashanah service and it was wonderful. Spiritual, uplifting, inspiring and just long enough! Thank you to the rabbi and cantor and the musicians as well.” – Marcia B.

“Thank you for leading such wonderful High Holiday services with Jeremiah. My daughter, who lives in Brooklyn and hasn’t been to any kind of services in years, said that Kol Nidre was the best shul experience she’s ever had. I hope you’ll be back in Brooklyn next year.”
