Kathleen Supové: Crazy Pandemic Blowout

Thursday, February 18, 20218:00 pm

Roulette’s Winter 2021 will be live streamed from our stage and archived on our website. Watch the video of this performance below.

Roulette welcomes pianist Kathleen Supové for an evening of music grounded in artistic excellence and resonant with the collective feelings we’re having about the current state of the world. Her program seeks to explore the emotional oscillation between hopelessness and helplessness, and empowerment. Milica Paranosic’s Meeting Jessica puts you in an MRI machine discovering the tumor that has caused pain for years; inti figgis-vizueta’s a bridge between starshine and clay choreographs the deadly dance of a binary life; Supové’s own compositions explore the responses of children to the pandemic through drawing; Rahilia Hasanova’s Monad digs into her rage upon seeing family members slaughtered in Baku. Finally, Nicole Lizée’s Tarantino Études are inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill series.

Program
Meeting Jessica by Milica Paranosic

Tarantino Etudes by Nicole Lizée (world premiere of piano version)

a bridge between starshine and clay by inti figgis-vizueta

Vigils by Kathleen Supové (world premiere) based on graphic scores

Monad by Rahilia Hasanova

Roulette’s Winter season will be presented virtually and available for free on a variety of streaming platforms. Our theater is currently closed for public performances as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the safety measures that Roulette has put in place to keep staff, artists, and the public safe

This performance is also available on YouTube and Facebook.

“What Ms. Supové is really exploding is the piano recital as we have known it, a mission more radical and arguably more needed.” Anthony Tommasini, NY Times

In 2012, Kathleen Supové received the John Cage Award from ASCAP for “the artistry and passion with which she performs, commissions, records, and champions the music of our time.”  She has also received a Visionary Award from Nouveau Classical Project (Sugar Vendil, Artistic Director).

Supové annually presents a series of solo concerts entitled THE EXPLODING PIANO, performing and premiering works by a Who’s Who of contemporary music. The Exploding Piano is a multimedia experience using electronics, theatrical elements, vocal rants, staging, collaboration with artists from other disciplines, Yamaha Disklaviers, laptop orchestras, robots, and XReality. Upcoming projects include MIGRATION. Her latest solo recording is EYE TO IVORY, Starkland label. Supové has now received a number of commissions and two ASCAP Plus Awards as a composer. The piano version of Nicole Lizéeʼs Tarantino Études was created with the generous assistance of the Look + Listen Festival. Special thanks to John Glover.
