Mary Griffin & Leroy Jenkins

Jenkins2 is a dramatic cantata for live performance drawing on the artists’ personal and familial biographies: African American and Welsh. Griffin grew up in Wales; her mother’s maiden name was Jenkins. Based on the idea that, sharing a Welsh surname, the librettist and composer/violinist might also share a common slave-owner ancestor. Long time friends, they launched this project focusing on the cultural and political histories of their families. Plus an encore piece with Jenkins and “Blue” Gene Tyranny, piano.
