The crossings referred to in the title of Ned Rothenberg’s new ensemble are myriad: stylistic, generational, and sonic; they are also unified by an expansive grasp of the way in which improvisation and composition can complement each other. There is no conceptual battle between the approaches—they always look toward a common expressive goal. The performance will be a nonstop set in which the transitions between sections will operate from timbral, rhythmic and melodic fulcra while allowing each player ample time to stretch out.
