Peter Evans opens his residency with a solo trumpet performance, a format in which he has been working for 15 years. His approach utilizes a process of intense practice and preparation against itself, with control over both the instrument and the musical narrative pushed to their breaking points. Evans’ solo performances seek to move past linear, rationally composed musical structures into an expressive multi-dimensional space.
Widely regarded as a leading figure in the field of solo performance, Evans music creates a visceral and intense sonic environment for the listener, oscillating wildly between amplified, almost electronic sounding textures and the most subtle, purely acoustic sounds possible. Preceding Roulette solo performance, Evans will work for several days in the venue, preparing the mind and body for a site-specific solo improvised solo composition.
Peter Evans: Solo is made possible, in part, by the Jerome Foundation. This is the first presentation of three concerts as part of Evans’ Artist Residency.
Over the last 33 years the Jerome Foundation has awarded Roulette almost $1 million, supporting hundreds of emerging artists through Roulette commissions, residencies and presentations. This sustained support has helped Roulette welcome successive generations of experimental artists into our community and onto our stage.
