Out Beyond by Robert Een

Tuesday, June 23, 20158:00 pm

Robert Een returns to Roulette joined by an all-star cast of musicians in an evening of new music. Coming out of the Downtown Music scene his influences are far ranging from Julius Eastman to Nino Rota, Meredith Monk to J.S. Bach, and a little bit of Igor Stravinsky and John Cage thrown in. Driven by cello and voice, Een orchestrates saxophones, accordion, hammer dulcimer and drum kit for a fresh take on concert music in the 21st century. Rollicking, vibrant, introspective, original and inviting are but a few adjectives that have been used to describe his music.

Robert Een – voice & cello

Ellen Gerdes – voice

Steve Elson – saxophones and duduk

Bill Ruyle – hammer dulcimer & frame drum

Jeff Berman – lap dulcimer and vibraphone

Cliff Hackford – drum set

“What Hendrix did for the guitar, freeing it from its previous role and expectations, Robert Een does for the cello.”
– Richard Kadray, San Francisco Chronicle

“Rarely is new music this much fun. Suavely post-minimalist.”  – Kyle Gann, Village Voice

Robert Een, composer, singer, cellist, performing artist; Obie Award for music composition, New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Awards for music composition and sustained achievement; presented worldwide. Known for the use of extended techniques for voice and cello; recorded sixteen albums of genre-defying original music. Scores for film directors Noah Baumbach, Eric Stoltz, Gregory Colbert, Andrea Simon; theater director and choreographers Dan Hurlin, Liz Lerman David Dorfman, Brian Selznick, Pearson/Widrig, Ron K. Brown among others.
