The Rise of the Novel is a new ensemble dedicated to prioritizing the spontaneity of music. The group celebrates the mixture of improvisation with composition—whether that comes from jazz or indeterminacy—preparing and performing it with the same respect and rigor normally reserved for concert hall modernism.

For this inaugural performance, members of the group perform works by LA jazz clarinet virtuoso John Carter, AACM polymath George Lewis, and the master of the sound map Annea Lockwood. The concert will also feature the world premiere of a new work by ensemble member Wendy Eisenberg.

Nate Wooley trumpet
Laura Cocks flute
Travis Laplante tenor saxophone
Wendy Eisenberg guitar
Lester St. Louis cello

With guests:

Jessica Pavone viola
Tara Khozein voice
Mari Maurice (moreaze) pedal steel and electronics

The Rise of the Novel (TRON) is a musical ensemble dedicated to music that celebrates the humanity and spontaneity of improvisation within the rigor and complexity of composition. We believe that some of the most exciting music of our time gives space to the performer to exercise the taste and sensitivity obtained from years of artistic practice, that opens up space for the communal and collaborative, and that believes that the greatest complexity comes from people working together on a common goal.
