December 3: Maria Stankova & Sasha Siem
December 10: Martin Hiendl & Monica Duncan
December 17: Daniel Dehaan & Felipe Lara

ICElab presents 2013 collaborators Martin Hiendl and Monica Duncan. Featured will be their ICElab 2013 commission, OFFSHORE, an ambitious piece for two percussionists, two trumpets, tuba, horn, electronics, and video. OFFSHORE deals with by the visual and sonic patterns of nautical communications while in passage between land and water. This passage is a danger zone, a space of shallow water, where ships barely skim the ocean floor and meticulously steer into port. Peril arises from our attempt to migrate between these two worlds.

Inspired by a decade of emerging artist commissions, ICElab channels our best composer/performer collaborations into a radical model for developing new music.

The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) functions as performer, presenter, and educator, advancing the music of our time by developing innovative new works and pursuing groundbreaking strategies for audience engagement. Since its founding in 2001, ICE has premiered over 500 compositions, the bulk of them by emerging composers, in venues ranging from New York’s Lincoln Center and Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art to galleries, bars, clubs, and schools around the world. The ensemble has released acclaimed albums on the Bridge, Naxos, Tzadik and New Focus labels, with forthcoming releases on Nonesuch, Kairos and Mode. With leading support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, ICE launched ICElab in early 2011. This new program places teams of ICE musicians in close collaboration with six emerging composers each year to develop works that push the boundaries of musical exploration. ICElab projects will be featured in more than twenty performances each season and documented online through DigitICE, a new online venue.

Martin Hiendl was born and raised in the Bavarian Forest in Germany. His music involves both instrumental and electronic sources and examines large-scale processes and ecstasy. The short opera Erwartung und Traumverlust was premiered by the International Ensemble Modern Academy conducted by Beat Furrer. Hiendl’s music has been played throughout Germany and the U.S.

Monica Duncan grew up in Webster, NY — around the apple orchards along Lake Ontario, the industry of Kodak and the tales of the Rochester Knockings. Her time-based work investigates the nature of visual and temporal perception through camouflage, stillness and the surrogate body. Duncan’s work has been exhibited widely thoughout the U.S. and Europe.
