An extraordinary American soprano recently returned after twenty years in Germany, Beth Griffith sings, acts and mimes the New York premiere of Mauricio Kagel’s “sensational and squalid” solo opera Phonophonie, in a staging created especially for her by the renowned German director Max Lehner. The work features a polyphony of roles depicted simultaneously in a touchingly sad portrait of a modern woman. Also on the program: a selection of new works written for Ms. Griffith.
