Never satisfied with past musical accomplishments, Matthew Shipp assembled a new quartet that will have their premiere performance at this year’s Vision Festival, kicking off a night of unpredictable and mind-expanding music. Staircase in Space is drummer Whit Dickey’s new band celebrating a release of the same name on his label, Tao Forms. With KERNEL, the acclaimed team of Davalois Fearon and Mike McGinnis take inspiration from Africanist inspired forms such as reggae and dancehall in a multi-discipline work for dance and reeds. William Parker, Hamid Drake, and Cooper-Moore embody the heart of Vision with rhythmic, spiritual, and collective music-making; an all too rare opportunity to hear this trio of giants. The evening concludes with a collaboration featuring the lauded duo of Ned Rothenberg and Sylvie Courvoisier, joined by the great drummer Hamid Drake.

Founded in 1996, the Vision Festival is New York City’s longest continuously running jazz festival. Now in its 26th year, this festival of music, dance, poetry, and visual art is heralded as “one of New York’s most essential art events” (New York Times). Performances feature legendary and emerging stars representing the free jazz, experimental, and avant-garde communities and include Lifetime Achievement honorees like Amina Claudine Myers, Andrew Cyrille, Dave Burrell, Peter Brötzmann, and Milford Graves. This year, we honor Wadada Leo Smith and Oliver Lake.
