Mixology Power Switch: The Nine Lives of Electronic Music: Val-Inc // Trumpet Trumpet Synthesizer

The 2016 edition of Roulette’s Festival of Mixology explores the history and tradition of electronics as it influences contemporary performance. Over five days and featuring nine artists and their collaborators, the Festival illustrates the potency of invention and re-invention that has fueled experimentation and imagination for a century. Concerts feature masters in the art of of Theremin, synthesizer, sampling, glitch, appropriation, film and video interface, analog processing, circuit bending, and DJ technology.

Curated by David Weinstein, the co-founder of Roulette and producer of the first Festival of Mixology over 25 years ago, the series celebrates resurrected, restored, and recovered machinery, vintage recordings, and principles of electronic sound and image stretched to impact new and adventurous work.

Trumpet Trumpet Synthesizer,  the collaborative project of Brad Henkel and Weston Minissali, presents recent works of tangled and evolving ambience. The duo engages in odd strategies to reimagine pathways of improvised music. Combining their high-tech gear with 90s gadgetry, the two generate surprising and seductive sonorities. Their work marries the grit, spit, and oomph of Henkel’s amplified trumpet and the hushed, babysoft sighs of Minissali’s vocoder/vocal/synth, joyfully subverting expectations.

Composer/percussionist/turntablist Val Jeanty evokes the esoteric realms of the creative subconscious in her performance persona as Val-Inc. Her “Afro-Electronica” incorporates Haitian musical traditions into the present and beyond, combining vodou samples, chants, and inspirations with hand percussion and electronics blending the archaic with the ultra-modern.
